On a family vacation one summer, we crossed Wyoming and noted several historical
points of interest. The children were especially interested because they enjoyed the
computer game “Oregon Trail,” which gives players a taste of the hardships the pioneers
endured. We stopped at the famous South Pass to look at the wagon tracks still visible in the dirt.
Squinting out over the desolate, wind-swept landscape, my daughter nodded
and said grimly, “This is where my oxen always die.” 😳😳

Answer: Cool Hand Luke!
“Cool Hand Luke” is a prison film released in 1967, and is based on the novel of the same name by Donn Pearce. Newman portrays Lucas “Luke” Jackson, a decorated war veteran who, after a night of heavy drinking, decides to decapitate a few parking meters, after which he is arrested and sentenced to two years in a Florida prison camp. Because of his rebellious nature and inability to conform to the rules, the guards and in particular the prison warden (nicknamed the Captain and played by veteran actor Strother Martin), make it their mission to break him. After Luke is returned to the prison following a failed escape attempt, Luke makes a remark that the Captain takes offense to; this results in Luke being beaten and pushed to the ground. The quote is the opening line of a short speech the Captain delivers to the other prisoners directly following the incident.
